Proper Social Networking

By Jay NaPier

The world of social networking remains one of the greatest ways to market a product or service. Of course, there are certain ways to go about this that are better than others. Look at it this way billboard marketing has worked for decades. But, you can't put up a billboard with the picture of a product next to the words "BUY THIS!" That just won't work and neither will poorly conceived social networking marketing plans.

It's too bad that many don't pay attention to the social component. As a result, their social networking etiquette is skewed and their marketing plans don't work. That is why it's important to understand a few basic social networking etiquette skills when working your marketing plan.

You can't forget that people on social networking sites are, people. Too often, someone looking to expand their network do so in a stoic, anteseptic way. Sending out friend requests to someone without any introduction or comment won't grow your network. It's just another form of spamming. Many online marketers follow this strategy. It generally doesn't work because it looks like the person is sending the request in bulk to profiles that were never looked at. It looks that way because that's how some do it.

There are better way. One of them would be to send a friend request, then a personal comment to let the other person know you are not spamming them. Acknowledge something personal about the person or ask a question related to the person's interest. Basically, make sure the individual realizes you are not mass mailing anonymous requests. Your response will be more positive and you'll build a bigger network.

Avoiding crudement is vital. Avoid "R Rated" topics and correspondence. It's self-defeating and should be avoided at all costs.

It is also important to stress the friendship aspect of your social networking venture. Again, we need to return to our original point: social networking is about being social. When you develop a profile or attempt to communicate with other members and all you stress is business, people won't respond positively. This is because you will not be making the critical personal connections needed to be successful. Again, it is important to stress common interests in a fun manner when you are building a social networking site. Let the marketing aspect compliment this prime directive.

Let who you are shine through your profile. People will feel more comfortable with people they know. One way you can help people get to know you would be through presenting a profile that displays your likes and interests. One way to do this would be to devise a profile filled with upbeat pictures of you taking part in activities you like. Or, you could present a pictorial homage of hobbies or interests that you enjoy. People who share these interests will definitely feel more comfortable with you and your business as result.

If you're using a social blog, use a similar approach. Blogging is one of the greatest ways to call attention to you and your business. But, don't make it all about business. That makes it dull and undermines the social value of the site. In addition to your business topics, blog about things you like to do, things in the news, and what's on your mind. Once again, it is critical to stay positive and upbeat

Really, social networking etiquette is simple politeness and common sense. When you employ such a mix, success follows. Guaranteed!
