This is a free web mail service of the Windows Live brand provided by Microsoft. MSN Hotmail was developed by Microsoft and first released on July 4, 1996. Its latest release was on December 8, 2008 and it can be used in 35 languages.
The fathers of the Hotmail web service were Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith who designed it before it became the property of Microsoft. The purchase by the giant and the re-branding as MSN Hotmail occurred in 1997. The current version, that is Windows Live Hotmail, which was officially announced on November 1, 2005, appeared as an update to the existing MSN Hotmail service. Only after having been beta tested for a while, it was officially released in the Netherlands on November 9, 2006 and to the world from May to October, 2007.
Hotmail is actually used by more than 260 million people all over the world. Windows Live Hotmail or MSN Hotmail comes with 5GB of free storage, Ajax technology, patented security measures and integration with Windows live messenger, Contacts, Calendar and Spaces. The programming support of the web mail services is Ajax technology, also used as a support for the Internet browsers, Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer.
The Hotmail structure allows the use of the keyboard controls so that the movement around the page doesn't even require the use of the mouse.
It also has folder-based organization of messages, auto-completion of contact addresses when the user composes, message filters, importing and exporting contacts as CVS files, SPAM filtering and virus scanning, different language versions and support for multiple addresses. As for other features rich text formatting, rich text signature and contact grouping are relevant examples.
The nice thing about MSN hotmail is that it also provides some features which are not common with the other webmail services. For instance, the audio player and the customized information remain in the full management of the user.
